Rianne

CLOUD ENGINEER

Rianne has come a long way since she built her first computer aged 11. She had retained an interest in music and technology and, when struggling to find a job that suited her skills and interests, she reached out to The Prince’s Trust. She has since gone from strength to strength – her determination and potential being acknowledged in 2022 when she was named as a rising star in the TechWomen100 Awards.

“In 2019, I was unemployed for about nine months – it was a very difficult time. I signed on to receive Universal Credit and it felt like there were so few opportunities out there. I felt lost and down. I wanted to be financially independent and felt embarrassed that I couldn’t be, even though I knew a lot of people were in a similar situation.”

“It was then that I saw an opportunity with The Prince’s Trust and I thought I’d go for it. I had always been interested in technology, have a degree in music business and production, and had spent time working in a mobile phone shop as an ambassador for tech brands and products. The Get Started with Tech programme seemed a good fit. I thought working in tech could be a good way of future-proofing my skillset and I also didn’t feel I could be fussy, so I took a leap.

“Whilst on the programme, I learned new skills, met like-minded people and received advice on building a CV and practising interview techniques. We also received a mentor as well as financial support with travel to and from the programme.

“One of the employers linked with the programme was News UK and, when the programme finished, I applied for a role with them. I was so excited when I got the job! The fact that I began the role just before the pandemic was a real blessing. I still work for them - maintaining programmes, solving security issues and helping teams with their requests.

“In 2022, I won an award at the TechWomen100 Awards which was a huge achievement and made me realise how far I have come. In the future, I want to continue progressing in a technical role within engineering so that I can become a senior technician. Maybe one day I’ll even have my own consultancy!”

“To those thinking of joining a course, do it! The Prince’s Trust has so many resources and people that can help you.”
