Volunteering roles

Volunteering

Volunteering is an excellent way to gain skills and experience while making a real impact. Here we've curated a few volunteering opportunities from across the UK:

STEM Learning is looking for Climate Ambassadors from a broad range of backgrounds to help deliver meaningful change on sustainability and climate change within the education system.

Climate Ambassadors work with nurseries, schools and colleges to develop climate action plans. Climate action plans will be designed to bring together all the work that education settings are doing on sustainability and climate change. They will cover decarbonisation, adaptation and resilience, biodiversity and climate education and green careers.

You don’t need to be an expert in all these topics- you can focus your time working on things that align with your experience. You'll be provided with training and development to help you make the most of your skills, and there will be opportunities for you to work with the leaders, staff, young people and governors within your paired educational setting.

Help community energy groups take their projects to the next level.

Hundreds of community energy groups are shaking up the UK's power systems and building stronger, healthier energy communities.

For every £1 they spend, they're generating about £9 in social benefit, helping neighbours lower their energy bills, upgrade their homes and push green energy.

But with 80% of their work being done by volunteers, these groups really need some skilled support!

How to get involved:

  1. Sign up through their bespoke volunteering portal below

  2. Update your profile with a few details about yourself & the experience you bring (doesn't matter if you don't have any!)

  3. Search opportunities that fit your skills and interests

  4. Apply for roles that suit you, your lifestyle & what you want to get out of volunteering

  5. Find your match, get stuck in & make a difference!

The National Energy Foundation (NEF) is an independent charity based in Milton Keynes, which has been at the forefront of improving the use of energy in buildings since 1988. They aim to provide people, organisations, and government with the knowledge, support, and inspiration they need to understand, manage, and reduce energy use in buildings.

NEF is always keen to hear from people who wish to help by working as a volunteer, and they're committed to providing a fair and supportive environment for anyone who does.

Volunteering with NEF opens up lots of opportunities for learning new knowledge, generating ideas and extending professional networks whilst, at the same time, it provides valuable experience in a professional environment.

Volunteer placements are either home-based or from their office in Milton Keynes depending on the type of volunteer placement you undertake.

As a STEM Ambassador, you'll offer your time, passion, and energy to visit schools, colleges, and youth group organisations to deliver a range of requests from teachers and youth group leaders who want to link STEM subjects to the real world of work.

Volunteers do not need to have a background in education. STEM Learning offer training and support to enable Ambassadors to confidently deliver a range of activities to young people, including career talks.

If you have a passion to inspire the next generation in STEM, whether you are self-employed or work for a small, medium, or large STEM organisation, you can join the STEM Ambassador community!

Trees for Cities is the only UK charity working at a national scale to improve lives by planting trees in cities.

They get stuck in with local communities to cultivate lasting change in their neighbourhoods – whether it’s revitalising forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments or getting people excited about growing, foraging and eating healthy food.

Tree planting season runs from October to March because the cooler, wetter months help young trees establish strong roots before summer. This early growth is crucial for their survival and future development.

Trees for Cities also run tree maintenance events throughout the summer, which are a great opportunity to learn how to care for new trees and woodlands.

You can make a real difference in your community by volunteering with Citizens Advice.

Volunteers are at the heart of how they deliver the Citizens Advice service, whether it's:

  • helping people online, over the phone, or in person

  • raising funds

  • researching and campaigning for policy change

  • helping witnesses in court in our Witness Service

  • helping the service to run smoothly in our admin and customer service roles
